Five Below coming to FD

Discount store planned for South 29th Street

A new store promising prices ranging from $1 to $5 on a wide variety of merchandise is planned for Fort Dodge.

The store, called Five Below, would be built along South 29th Street between Hy-Vee and the building that houses Marshall’s and Hobby Lobby.

Plans for the store were revealed Tuesday when the city’s Board of Adjustment approved a variance to the sign rules for the property. Associate City Planner Thomas Leichliter said he did not have any information on the time frame for building and opening the store.

The store will be a 9,850 square foot building on a rather narrow lot. The property is owned by Fort Dodge Holding Co. LLC, of Sapulpa, Oklahoma.

Five Below is based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Established in 2002, the chain has 1,200 stores in 40 states.The nearest one to Fort Dodge is in Ames.

Five Below stores offer decor, bedding, rugs, furniture, lamps, toys, electronics, beauty supplies, clothes, arts and crafts items, snacks and cleaning supplies.

The sign variance for the store was approved unanimously.

Also on Tuesday, the board approved a special exception to allow the construction of a 2,400 square foot addition to the Youth Shelter Care facility at 301 Ave. M West. The addition will house a gymnasium.

The board also approved a special exception to allow a sign marking the entrance to the auxiliary gym at Fort Dodge Senior High School, 819 N. 25th St.
