Altman pleads guilty to voluntary manslaughter

Quanterious L. Altman has pleaded guilty to amended charges in the shooting death of Adrian D. Grover in the spring of 2023.

Altman, 19, of Fort Dodge, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter while armed with a dangerous weapon; willful injury causing serious injury while armed with a dangerous weapon; and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, according to court records.

The plea agreement was made on March 1. Altman will be sentenced April 15 at the Webster County Courthouse.

Two of the charges are Class C felonies, each punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine of between $1,370 and $13,660. The charge of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person is a Class D felony, normally punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine up to $10,245.

Originally, he pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder and harassment. Murder is a class A felony in Iowa, punishable by life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

Altman was 18 when he was arrested on May 12, 2023, accused of shooting 18-year-old Adrian D. Grover to death in Fort Dodge.

The shooting was reported in the intersection of 10th Avenue Southwest and 10th Street Southwest shortly before 3 a.m. May 12. When officers arrived, they found Grover unresponsive on the ground. Grover was later pronounced dead.

Officers quickly located a vehicle matching the description of one reported to have fled the scene and conducted a high-risk traffic stop. As a result of the stop, Altman was detained and then arrested.

Altman was also charged with first-degree harassment for allegedly threatening and pointing a gun at Taelore Presswood.

Prior to his plea of guilty to the amended charges, Altman was facing a trial in Cerro Gordo County. Late last summer, his defense attorney, Charles Kenville, filed a motion for a change of venue, citing media coverage around the time of the shooting that he said would prevent Altman from receiving a fair and impartial trial.

Altman is being held in the Webster County Jail.
