Your city, your services
Exciting features, services for everyone at the Fort Dodge Public Library
Editor’s note: This is the first of a new, occasional series of columns written by Fort Dodge city employees explaining the services that their agencies provide to the public.
The Fort Dodge Public Library has always been a cornerstone of community engagement and learning. Recently, the library has made several exciting updates and additions to its existing services, further enhancing the experience for its patrons. Here are some of those new and not-so-new features:
New website: User-friendly and informative
The library is excited to announce the launch of its new mobile-friendly website, https://www.fortdodgelibrary.org/. The platform is designed with an interactive calendar of events to help patrons stay up to date with the library’s activities. The website also simplifies the process of booking meeting rooms online.
A new addition to the website is a page called “FDPL Recommends” where staff-curated book recommendations are showcased. Another valuable feature is a new page listing community resources. The website also includes information about the library partnerships with the Webster County Historical and Genealogical societies and the Karl King Municipal Band — all organizations with offices inside the library.
Books on the Go: Bringing the library to your doorstep
Understanding the needs of its patrons, the library offers the “Books on the Go” program for homebound individuals within Fort Dodge. This service caters to those confined to their residences temporarily or permanently due to various reasons. The program includes personalized selections based on patron preferences, with options to request specific titles, bestsellers, and popular DVDs. Deliveries are made approximately every three weeks by dedicated volunteers. For more information, contact the Adult Reference Desk at 515-573-8167 ext. 6224 or via email. https://www.fortdodgelibrary.org/books-on-the-go
Adventure Passes: Explore more with your library card
The library participates in the Iowa Libraries Adventure Pass program, granting library cardholders access to several attractions across Iowa. This unique service is available to Fort Dodge, Otho, Barnum, or rural Webster County residents over 18 with a library account in good standing. The passes include entry to venues like the Science Center of Iowa, Reiman Gardens, Blank Park Zoo, the Greater Des Moines Botanical Gardens, and the Des Moines Children’s Museum. https://www.fortdodgelibrary.org/adventure-pass
myLIBRO app: Your library in your pocket
Embracing technology, the library has introduced the myLIBRO app, allowing patrons to access the library’s collection from any mobile device. This app enables users to manage their accounts, place holds, check due dates, renew materials, and search the collection. It also solves the common problem of forgotten library cards by displaying the card info on the app.
Faxing, scanning, and printing services
The library offers patrons a ScanEZ station for copying, faxing, and scanning documents to various digital platforms for no or a minimal fee. This self-service station includes document editing features, and staff are available to assist as needed. Additionally, ePrinting services from any mobile device, laptop, or home computer to the library printer are available, adding another layer of convenience for patrons. https://www.fortdodgelibrary.org/copy-scan-fax
These enhancements, coupled with the ongoing commitment to provide diverse and accessible services, underscore the Fort Dodge Public Library’s role as a vital part of the Fort Dodge community. By continuously adapting to the needs of its patrons and embracing technological advancements, the library not only serves as a hub for information and learning but also fosters a strong sense of community connection and engagement.
Get to know Library Director Rita Schmidt
My favorite thing about working at the library is the people. Helping them find a good book to read and/or the information they need. Serving as a safe place where they can be themselves and discover what they excel at, what truly interests them. Helping them learn more about themselves, their community, and the world around them.
Rita has worked at the Fort Dodge Public Library since 1992, serving as director since 2016.
