One woman was injured Monday night when she was struck by a vehicle while crossing a busy Fort Dodge intersection. According to Fort Dodge Police Lt. Dennis Mernka, Susan Nelson, 62, of Fort Dodge, was driving westbound on Fifth Avenue South when she attempted to turn onto South 15th Street. At the same time, he said, 37-year-old April Wacht, of Fort Dodge, was crossing South 15th Street while talking on the phone and was struck by Nelson’s vehicle. The incident happened at about 7 p.m. The Fort Dodge Fire Department also responded and Wacht was transported to UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries. According to Mernka, both Nelson and another individual who witnessed the incident said they didn’t see Wacht walking in the intersection prior to being struck. No citations were given, he said.
