Dayton man charged with theft for selling $17,000 in hog crates

Crates belonged to someone else

A Dayton man is facing up to 10 years in prison after he allegedly sold dozens of hog crates that didn’t belong to him on Facebook Marketplace.

According to court documents, 47-year-old Joshua Daniel Stockdale, of Dayton, is charged with first-degree theft, a Class C felony. He is accused of selling 100 hog crates to an Earlville man at $170 per crate, for a total of $17,000. The crates, however, belonged not to Stockdale but instead were the property of the farm he worked at northwest of Dayton.

Stockdale allegedly presented himself as the crates’ owner and negotiated the sale with the victim, who wrote him a check for $17,000. The check was cashed Jan. 10 and the victim later discovered that the crates belonged to someone else and Stockdale had no authority to keep the money from the sale.

Stockdale had his initial appearance in Webster County Magistrate Court on Tuesday. He was released from custody on his own recognizance.
