The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning Sunday, predicting heavy snowfall across central Iowa today and Tuesday.
Total snow accumulation of 5 to 8 inches is expected, with winds gusting to 40 mph or higher by Tuesday afternoon, creating hazardous driving conditions.
The warning is in effect from 9 a.m. Monday until 6 p.m. Tuesday for the Messengerland counties of Webster, Calhoun, Hamilton and Sac.
Southern Iowa is expected to get the brunt of the storm, with predicted snowfall totals between 6 and 11 or more inches.
The National Weather Service advised drivers to plan on slippery road conditions, with patchy blowing snow and significantly reduced visibility, which could affect both the morning and evening commutes.
For those who find it necessary to travel, the National Weather Service advised keeping an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
