Deadly house fire claims Burt man’s life

BURT — A Burt man died Thursday night from injuries sustained while trapped in a house fire that also hospitalized his wife and claimed the life of the family dog.

According to a press release from the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office, the Burt Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services were sent to 403 Fifth St. for a report of a house fire. When crews arrived, they found the home fully engulfed and still occupied.

One of the homeowners, Donna Tripp, had been able to escape and told firefighters that her husband, Marvin, and their family dog were still trapped in the house. Firefighters were able to locate and remove Marvin Tripp, 79, from the burning structure. He was transported by ambulance to Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona, where he was pronounced dead.

Donna Tripp, 58, was taken to KRHC and then transferred to Mercy Hospital in Mason City. As of Friday afternoon, she remained in the hospital in unknown condition. The family’s dog also died due to injuries suffered in the fire.

According to the release, the Tripps’ home was a total loss due to the fire. The cause of the fire is currently undetermined, but is under investigation by the Iowa State Fire Marshal’s Office.

The Burt Fire Department was assisted by fire and EMS departments from Bancroft, Titonka, Lone Rock and Algona, as well as the Kossuth County Emergency Management and Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office.
