Bridge work in progress

An excavator was at work Thursday afternoon breaking up the driving surface and deck of a westbound section of the Kenyon Road Bridge. Twisted masses of steel rebar lay beneath the bridge. The westbound portions of the bridge are being demolished and will be replaced with a new bridge. The work started in early November and wil continue through September 2024. United Contractors, of Johnston, has a $15.2 million contract from the state for the job.

Chunks of concrete stuck to the steel beams beneath them are all that remain of a portion of the Kenyon Road Bridge's deck. The westbound sections of the bridge are being demolished and will be replaced with a new bridge in a project that will continue through late 2024.

A crane towers over the east end of the Kenyon Road Bridge near South Eighth Street. It is one of many large machines being used in the demolition of the westbound lanes of the bridge.
