Refrigerant leak hits Fort Dodge store
A pipe carrying refrigerant in a Fort Dodge grocery store ruptured Wednesday morning, prompting a response by city police and firefighters.
The problem was reported at 9:35 a.m. at Aldi at First Avenue South and 29th Street and was initially described as a freezer explosion.
What actually happened, according to Fire Department Capt. Jeff Hill, was that a copper pipe carrying refrigerant burst. He said there was probably a loud noise when the pipe burst and some insulation fell to the floor. That, he said, may have caused people to think there had been an explosion.
When police and firefighters arrived there was a light haze in the building, according to Hill.
Firefighters checked the quality of the air and used large fans to ventilate the building.
Hill said the amount of refrigerant that was found was not toxic.
Emergency personnel were on scene for about an hour.
