The current scorching weather can take a toll on people that's far worse than that typical hot, sweaty and uncomfortable feeling.
Exposure to very hot weather can cause medical problems that may even be life-threatening.
Anyone who has been in hot weather and shows a significant change in their thinking or mental status, passes out, or has a high body temperature needs immediate emergency help, according to Dr. Joe Larson, a family practice physician with UnityPoint Clinic -- Kenyon Road.
He said babies and the elderly are at increased risk.
"It is even more important to keep them out of the heat," he said.
Staying out of the heat is good advice for all age brackets, he added.
"Stay inside as much as you possibly can when it's this hot," Larson said. "Also, try to drink more than you would normally."
Drinking water is fine and if a person has been sweating a lot, having a sports drink will help to replace electrolytes lost in the sweat, according to the doctor.
For those who have to be out in the heat because of their work, Larson recommends wearing light-colored, loose fitting clothes; drinking a lot of fluids and taking more breaks.
There are two primary conditions a person can be afflicted with during exposure to heat: heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
The symptoms of heat exhaustion include, dizziness, fatigue and excessive sweating. Larson said first aid for this condition includes getting into a cool environment; drinking fluids; putting cool, wet towels on the skin and perhaps taking a cool shower. .A visit to the emergency room may be necessary.
Heat stroke is a more serious condition. Larson said the body temperature of a person suffering from heat stroke soars to over 100 degrees and the individual stops sweating. He said heat stroke is definitely a medical emergency and 911 needs to be called to get help for the person.
