Dedicated pickleball courts would be constructed in Fort Dodge as a result of expected City Council action tonight.
The council is expected to award a contract for building the courts, ending the need for enthusiasts of the game to play on basketball courts.
The council will meet in the Municipal Building, 819 First Ave. S.
First on the agenda is a 5:30 p.m. workshop on a mental health first responder program being implemented by the Police Department. A mental health professional will be working with police officers on a regular basis to help them with people they encounter who need some mental health help.
The council's regular business meeting will start at 6 p.m.
During that session, the council will consider awarding a contract for construction of the pickleball courts. Minturn Inc., of Brooklyn, submitted the apparent low bid of about $305,000.
The completed courts will be near the Rosedale Rapids Aquatic Center at 32nd Street and 10th Avenue North.
Pickleball is similar to tennis, except it is played with solid paddles and a wiffle ball. A pickleball court measures 22-by-44 feet.
Fort Dodge does not have a true pickleball court. The game is now played on the basketball courts at Dodger Courts.
Pickleball players have been asking the council for dedicated courts for at least a year.
