The Dragoneirs, a youth dragon boat team, was one of two youth teams competing in the 2022 Badger Lake Dragon Boat Bash at John F. Kennedy Memorial Park.
Linda Donner doesn’t want to keep the annual Badger Lake Dragon Boat Bash’s “best kept secret” a secret anymore — area kids are invited to paddle with the open youth team at this weekend’s annual event at John F. Kennedy Memorial Park.
The open youth team is for anyone between the ages of 11 and 17, regardless of prior experience in dragon boating. It is a free way for youth to learn about the sport, learn how to paddle and have the opportunity to compete during Saturday’s races, Donner said.
“We’ve had a youth team for years,” said Donner, one of the event organizers. “The youth are the future of the sport.”
For those who haven’t paddled a dragon boat before — or those who need a quick reminder course — a practice is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. Wednesday at Badger Lake in Kennedy Park. Youth must have a waiver signed by a parent to participate. If someone who wants to participate can’t make it to Wednesday’s practice, Donner said, they can still show up on Saturday and get a crash-course before the races.
The Badger Lake Dragon Boat Association will provide life jackets and paddles.
On Saturday, the open youth team will also participate in at least one race, Donner said.
“We want to encourage them to learn about the sport and learn about dragon boating,” she said. “We want the sport to continue for years and years to come and the only way to get people interested is to let them try it.”
