An assistant Webster County attorney has been nominated to fill an upcoming District Associate Court judge vacancy for Judicial District 2B.
Assistant Webster County Attorney Ashley Beisch was named one of two nominees for the role following a day of interviews with the 2B Judicial Nominating Commission on June 29.
"I am extremely honored to have been chosen as a finalist by the District 2B Judicial Nominating Commission," Beisch told The Messenger. "The judicial system is a critical part of society and is a vital function to providing independent and accessible forums to administer justice under the law equally to all persons. As a person who grew up in rural Iowa, my life experiences sparked an interest in public service and a desire to make a difference in my community."
Beisch, a Boone native, has been with the Webster County Attorney's Office since May 2022. Prior to that, she worked in private practice in Ogden and Guthrie Center. She earned her law degree from the Drake University Law School in 2016.
The vacancy on the bench is due to the upcoming retirement of District Associate Judge James Malloy.
"I want and hope all people who come in contact with the judicial system leave feeling heard and with a confidence that the rule of law was followed," Beisch said. "That starts with the personnel who the public comes in contact with and especially how judges conduct themselves and their courtrooms."
Beisch has been a finalist for a judgeship in District 2B twice before -- once in January 2022 and once in November 2022.
Torey Cuellar, first assistant county attorney in Boone County, is the other finalist for the current judicial opening. Gov. Kim Reynolds has 30 days from the nomination to appoint one of the nominees to the bench.
"I have spent most of my career practicing within those systems, specifically in front of district associate judges, in both juvenile court and criminal court in various capacities," Beisch said. "I feel very blessed to have another opportunity to serve my home community of Boone, Iowa, in this position as district associate judge."
Judicial District 2B includes much of north central Iowa, including Webster, Hamilton, Humboldt, Calhoun, Wright, Pocahontas and Sac counties.
