Arrest made in March gas station shooting

Reward increased for second suspect

One of the men wanted in connection to a shooting at a Fort Dodge convenience store last spring that injured two people has been arrested on unrelated charges in Chicago.

According to a release from the Fort Dodge Police Department, 20-year-old Keeshaun J. Crooks was arrested on Tuesday in Chicago for multiple firearm, narcotics and assault offenses stemming from a Chicago Police Department investigation. Crooks initially gave CPD a false name that was associated with Fort Dodge, and they eventually learned Crooks’ actual identity and that he had several warrants out of Webster County.

Crooks was wanted on warrants for willful injury, a Class C felony; intimidation with a dangerous weapon, a Class C felony; going armed with intent, a Class D felony; possession of a firearm as a felon, a Class D felony; and assault while displaying a dangerous weapon, an aggravated misdemeanor.

The charges stem from a March 7 shooting at the Star Convenience store at 1601 Fifth Ave. S. The shootout was reported at 9:21 p.m. when Webster County 911 dispatchers received multiple calls reporting shots fired in the area of the convenience store.

One of the two people injured in the exchange of gunfire was found at Domino’s Pizza, 1430 Fifth Ave. S. The other was found in a pickup truck in the 500 block of South 16th Street. The driver of the pickup was described by police as a good Samaritan who was trying to help the injured man. Both victims were taken by ambulance to UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center. Two large windows in the front of the store were shattered by the gunfire.

Crooks, along with 17-year-old Eadon L. Long, of Fort Dodge, were soon identified as suspects in the shooting. As of Friday, Long remains at large and is wanted for willful injury; intimidation with a dangerous weapon; going armed with intent; two counts of assault while displaying a dangerous weapon; and minor armed with a dangerous weapon, a serious misdemeanor.

The Webster County Crime Stoppers reward for information that leads to Long’s arrest was increased on Friday from $500 to $750.

Police said he should also be considered armed and dangerous.
