An upcoming day camp will enable local children to learn the backstories of familiar figures from the Bible and then spend their afternoons seeing some zoo animals and getting basic cooking tips.
The program that will make that happen is the St. Paul Lutheran Church and School Day Camp to be held next week at the Fort Dodge church.
The camp will begin Monday and continue through Friday. It is for kids in kindergarten through fifth grade.
The morning sessions, which will focus on the Bible, will be free. The afternoon sessions will cost $10 per child for the week.
"Our goal for this year is to offer families from Fort Dodge and all around the area an all day, fun and safe place to learn about how much Jesus loves them," said Lynn Meyer, the coordinator of the day camp.
"We want to give kids and families the resources and support to continue learning about God," she added.
To register for the day camp, visit stpaulfd.org. Children can also be registered at 8:45 a.m. Monday at the church, 400 S. 13th St.
The morning sessions will be from 9 a.m. to noon. Meyer said the theme is "Backstage with the Bible."
"It's all things behind the scenes," she said.
Subjects from both the Old Testament and the New Testament will be covered.
The Bible lessons will be led by the Rev. Kendall Meyer, pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church, and the Rev. Pedro Lopez, the assistant for Hispanic outreach and mission executive for the Iowa District West of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod.
Meyer said there will be craft projects that relate to the Bible lessons.Snacks will be served.
The afternoon sessions will be from noon to 3:30 p.m. Snacks and water will be provided, but the children will have to bring their own lunches.
There will be a different program each afternoon.
The programs will include:
• A visit from two animal ambassadors, plus their human helpers, from the Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines
• A presentation by the Community Orchard of Fort Dodge
• Basic cooking with Iowa State University Extension
• Learning about honey and beehives with Fort Dodge resident Britta McCollum
• Adventures in social drumming
