Area military veterans and their families are invited to the second annual veterans barbecue at Terry Moehnke Veterans Memorial Park next weekend.
The event, hosted by IowaWORKS, is set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 24 at 1386 National Ave., on the west side of Badger Lake. There will be free food, drinks and fun for the whole family.
"We've got a whole bunch of kids games, we've got some inflatables that are going to be out there, some face painting, cornhole, a caricaturist," said George Koslowski, veteran career planner with IowaWORKS. "And then we've also got a lot of barbecue coming. It's all free to the veterans and their families"
This is the second year IowaWORKS has hosted a barbecue for veterans and the goal is to show veterans and their families that their sacrifices are appreciated.
"My job specifically is to assist veterans in finding employment," Koslowski said. "And we've got my program and the Home Base Iowa programs that are both represented in Fort Dodge, and it's just a way that we can assist veterans after they've served."
Koslowski's office focuses on helping connect meaningful employment and educational opportunities for military veterans.
"We want to reach out to as many veterans as we possibly can in our community to let them know that we're here," he said. "And, as is the case with every one of these organizations, most of us are veterans and we just want to continue that teamwork with our fellow veterans, assisting them any way that we can."
Capt. Anthony Dvorak, with the Iowa Army National Guard in Fort Dodge, will be the guest speaker. There will also be many resources available, including groups that specifically assist veterans. Organizations include the Family Alliance for Veterans of America, the Brushy Creek Area Honor Flight, Homes for Heroes, Women Warriors Undefined and more.
