Foamy fun

Almost Home to host dog park party fundraiser June 24

Donovan, a 3-year-old American pit bull terrier, was covered nearly nose to tail with soap suds as he ran around the yard at Almost Home Humane Society of North Central Iowa on Tuesday afternoon.

No, he didn't escape bath time -- he was jumping through a cloud of foam during a foam party for the shelter dogs.

Tuesday's foam party for the doggos at Almost Home was actually a trial run for a fundraising event the animal shelter will be hosting later this month. Almost Home's dog park party will be from 1 to 4 p.m. June 24. Dogs (and their humans) from the community are invited to the party to enjoy a foam machine, sprinklers, a dunk tank, popcorn, snow cones, cotton candy and more in the shelter's dog park at 725 S. 32nd St.

"This is all to raise money for all the animals in our care," said Almost Home board member Tammy Grove.

Freewill donations will be accepted during the fundraising event.

Grove was recently approached by Drake Adams, owner of Duck King Fun Party Rentals, who wanted to have a party for the shelter's dogs. After speaking with Adams, Grove wanted to take it one step further and turn the party into a fundraising event for the nonprofit animal shelter.

"We've never done anything like this before," Grove said.

So to prepare, on Tuesday afternoon, they hosted an exclusive, invite-only party for the dogs who currently call the shelter home, like Donovan.

After romping through the suds, the dogs cooled down with a snow cone treat made with Bowser Beer's Porky Pug Porter, a non-alcoholic pork and malt barley treat for man's best friend.

"Drake has been so awesome," Grove said. "He's donated everything."

Grove also noted that the animal shelter is bursting at the seams with adoptable dogs and cats and in honor of Cat Adoption Month, Almost Home has significantly reduced adoption fees for all animals during June. Adoption fees for puppies under six months are $100, and for dogs over six months, the fee is $50. For kittens up to six months, fees are $75 for one or adopt two for $100. Cats of any age over six months have an adoption fee of $35.

"We are so full, and there's so many more animals waiting to come in," Grove said.

While the shelter dogs will be sitting out the June 24 party, they will still be available for adoption that day, she said.
