Carter Rial continues to add to his ever-growing resume.

The St. Edmond Catholic Schools senior was named one of the state's top academic students with his selection to the Iowa Governor's Scholar Program.

Each year, seniors are selected by their high schools as the highest academic achievers. A ceremony was held in Des Moines at the Iowa Events Center to honor them all recently.

Rial, who is heavily involved at St. Edmond in athletics and academics, also recently earned his degree from Iowa Central Community College. He plans to attend the University of Iowa and enter into the Tippie School of Business.

"Being the Governor's Scholar for St. Edmond is a huge honor for me," Rial said. "The nomination was based on standardized tests and grade-point average. It definitely took some discipline to get the grades and scores that I did. However, I want to make it very clear that it was not a solo effort.

"I've been surrounded by family, teachers and peers who've helped to build me up and get me to the point where I am today in my educational career. I am forever grateful to God for putting these people in my life, and I'm thankful for the opportunity given to me."

Area students named to the program include East Sac County's Taylor Aldag, Pocahontas Area's Akaysa Duitscher, Newell-Fonda's Emma Erickson, Humboldt's Tori Gargano, Emmetsburg's Devan Garman, South Central Calhoun's Keira Hammen, MacKenna Hasty of Clarion-Goldfield/Dows, Webster City's CJ Hisler, West Bend-Mallard's Benjamin Massner, Manson Northwest Webster's Lane Moline, Algona's Treston Severson, Bishop Garrigan's Eva Snyder and Eagle Grove's Braxton Steil.

The largest 64 schools in Iowa, according to the Iowa Department of Education Basic Educational Data Survey, were invited to select two seniors who are the highest academic achievers for their first seven semesters. All other schools were invited to select one senior who was the highest academic achiever for their first seven semesters.

The Governor's Office, the Iowa High School Athletic Association and its title sponsor, the Iowa Farm Bureau, started presenting this recognition in 2003.
