A retaining wall on the west side of Butler Elementary School will be demolished and rebuilt this summer.
On Monday, the Fort Dodge Community School District approved a bid from Wiseman Contracting, of Fort Dodge, to replace the 21-year-old structure. The low bid from Wiseman came in at $48,500. A $79,170 bid was also received from Jensen Builders, of Fort Dodge.
During Monday's meeting, Ryan Utley, director of buildings and grounds for the district, told the board that the retaining wall by the entrance to the school "is starting to crumble and collapse in its place."
The work on the retaining wall is expected to begin around June 5 and be completed by Aug. 11.
Utley said that over the years since Butler was built in 2002, drainage issues have contributed to the degradation of the retaining wall. He said the new structure has been redesigned to allow for better drainage and prevent future problems.
The board also approved the replacement of the operable stage wall that divides the music room and gymnasium stage at Butler. Utley said that the track that allows for the wall to be moved has failed and the original manufacturer is no longer in business, so replacement parts are no longer made.
The board approved the $57,100 bid from Skold Door, of Des Moines. A bid from Barron Equipment Company, of Des Moines, for $93,122.69 was also received.
The replacement will be completed with assistance from the school district's maintenance department prior to the start of the next school year.
