The 515 Big Band is a new jazz band comprising local musicians. The band’s first concert will be 7 p.m. Friday at the Phillips Auditorium.

Iowa’s newest big band is debuting on its home stage at the Fort Dodge Fine Arts Association Phillips Auditorium on Friday.

The 515 Big Band was created last year by musician and director Tiffany Wurth.

“I’ve played in a lot of different bands before this band and it’s kind of the culmination of all … the best players out of each of those bands,” Wurth said.

Friday’s show starts at 7 p.m. and will feature the Humboldt High School Wildcat Jazz Band as an opener. Tickets are $10 for adults, or $5 for guests under 18.

The 515 Big Band plays jazz music and includes five saxophones, four trombones, four trumpets, one piano, one guitar, one bass guitar and one percussion set. Some familiar local names in the band include Dan Cassady, Megan Cassady, Gabriel Alves, Paul Bloomquist, Steve Nelson, Tim Miller, Paul Hachmith and Jon Merrit.

All of the band’s members are current or former jazz educators, Wurth said.

“These are some outstanding musicians and a great group of people that have fun while playing jazz music,” she said. “I have been a member of numerous big bands, numerous concert bands and this by far is the best band I’ve been in with the greatest amount of talent and more importantly, the most jazz knowledge.”

Wurth said the band plans to play concerts on the Phillips stage each month. The next concert is scheduled for May 26.
