Final budget action on council agenda

Prohibited acts ordinance to be considered again

The Fort Dodge City Council is expected to approve the local government’s budget for 2023-2024 when it meets tonight.

It will also act on borrowing about $7 million for sanitary sewer work.

The elected officials will also consider the second reading of a measure to ban things like aggressive solicitations, obstructing sidewalks and public urination.

The council will meet at 6 p.m. today in the Municipal Building, 819 First Ave. S.

The proposed budget on the agenda is for the fiscal year that begins July 1 and ends June 30, 2024.

The budget’s bottom line of total expenditures and transfers out is about $153 million.

It includes a property tax levy of $20.74 per $1,000 of taxable value.

In another financial matter, the council will consider approving a state low-interest loan of about $7 million to help pay for improvements at the wastewater treatment plant and at a sanitary sewer lift station in the ag industrial park called Iowa’s Crossroads of Global Innovation.

The prohibited public acts ordinance up for its second reading tonight was written in response to concerns about the behavior of some homeless people downtown.

Violations of the ordinance would be prosecuted as simple misdemeanors.
