MNW to hold special election Tuesday

One candidate on ballot

Mark Siems

Voters in the Manson Northwest Webster School District will pick a member of the Board of Education during a special election Tuesday.

Mark Siems is the only candidate on the ballot for the District 1 seat.

He will complete the unexpired term of Steve Markert, who resigned late last year. The seat will be on the ballot again during the November general election, and the winner of that vote will serve a full term.

“We’ll see how my initial time goes but my intention is to, yes, run again in November,” Siems said.

The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Just two polling places will be open: the MAC Center in Manson and the Clare Community Center in Clare.

All voters within the school system’s boundaries can vote in the District 1 race, but whoever holds the seat must live in District 1.

In Webster County, that district includes Barnum and Clare, plus Douglas, Deercreek, and Johnson townships, as well as a portion of Jackson Township. It also includes some of eastern Calhoun County and a very small portion of southeastern Pocahontas County.

Siems, who lives near Clare, is making his first try for public office.

He is the golf course superintendent at the Fort Dodge Country Club.

The candidate is a native of Clare who graduated from Manson Northwest Webster High School. He attended Iowa Central Community College for two years, then earned a bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University in Ames.

He and his wife, Laura, have two children.

Starting at $4.94/week.
