Briley Singer and Manuela Rodriguez secured spots in the upcoming Iowa High School Speech Association individual state event after advancing out of districts held in Carroll.
Singer and Rodriguez will compete in the northwest division on Saturday to be held at Fort Dodge Senior High School.
“As a first-year speech coach, to send a large group entry to all-state was so exciting,” St. Edmond’s Alyssa Sparks said. “I really think we have the potential to send either of these gals for individual speech, as well.
“It has been an exciting year coaching the team.”
Singer advanced to two events, as she will compete in original oratory for her entry, “Depression,” which she wrote. She also qualified in acting with the piece, “I Love You Mommy.”

Rodriguez moved on in solo musical theater with “Journey to the Past” from the musical “Anastasia.”
“Briley was uncertain about her acting piece at first because it is about a subject she doesn’t have a lot of experience with and she was afraid she wouldn’t be able to pull it off,” Sparks said. “But she did. And it is a very moving piece.
“Manuela has put in a ton of work outside of meeting with me, as well. Her voice sounds beautiful and you can tell that she has been working hard on characterization.”
Alana Kirby, Ignatius Kirby and Zach Midtling also competed at districts for St. Edmond.
