Former East Sac teacher pleads guilty to sex abuse, exploitation by school employee
SAC CITY — A former special education teacher at East Sac County High School in Lake View pleaded guilty on Monday to a pair of felony sexual offenses.
Last March, the Sac County Sheriff’s Office arrested Stefanie Regine Kelsey, 35, of Sac City, and charged her with eight counts of third-degree sexual abuse, Class C felonies; and one count of sexual exploitation by a school employee, a Class D felony.
Criminal complaints said she admitted to having sexual contact with a 15-year-old male student on at least three separate occasions between Aug. 25, 2021, and March 4, 2022. The alleged sexual acts happened at Kelsey’s home and in a vehicle at Hagge County Park.
Kelsey pleaded not guilty to the charges in May. In January, the Sac County Attorney’s Office and Kelsey’s defense counsel were able to reach a plea agreement.
On Tuesday, Kelsey pleaded guilty to one count of third-degree sexual abuse and one count of sexual exploitation by a school employee. The remaining charges against her will be dismissed.
A sentencing hearing is scheduled for April 10.
Class C felonies carry a maximum prison sentence of 10 years, and Class D felonies carry a maximum of five years, so Kelsey could be facing a maximum of 15 years in prison, as well as criminal fines and the requirement of registering as a sex offender.
