Callender mother sentenced to 5 years for child endangerment

CALLENDER — A Callender mother will spend the next five years in prison after pleading guilty to four counts of child endangerment — bodily injury, all Class D felonies.

Michelle McMullen, 28, was sentenced Monday by District Court Judge Kurt Stoebe.

Last June, McMullen was arrested and charged with 10 counts of child endangerment — bodily injury following an investigation into reports that McMullen’s boyfriend, Joseph Hill, was abusing her children. Investigators allege McMullen knew about the abuse and failed to report it until asked about it by the Department of Human Services. She also allegedly allowed her children to be unsupervised with Hill, intentionally breaking a safety plan put in place by DHS.

Hill is charged with a battery of felony sexual abuse and child endangerment charges involving the children in McMullen’s home.

Under the plea agreement, the state dismissed the remaining six charges against McMullen.

On Monday, Stoebe sentenced McMullen to five years in prison for each of the four counts she pleaded guilty to. He ordered the sentences be served concurrent with one another. Stoebe also suspended the four $1,025 fines for each charge. The no contact order with the victims will continue for five years.

McMullen is out on pretrial release. She has until 9 a.m. Monday to turn herself into the custody of the Webster County Sheriff.

Starting at $2.99/week.
