Borsay enters race for FD council seat

Kyrie Borsay

Kyrie Borsay, a downtown business owner and professor at Iowa Central Community College, is running for the Fort Dodge City Council in the Feb. 7 special election.

She has filed nominating petitions at the City Clerk’s Office to be on the ballot for the at-large council seat.

“I think that being a Main Street business owner and being very invested in our Main Street community and downtown is one of the biggest reasons I want to serve on the City Council,” she said. “We have a beautiful downtown and I don’t know why we aren’t doing more with that space.”

She added that if she is elected, she could use her positions on the council and at Iowa Central to bring the college and community closer together.

Borsay opened a store called KD’s Over the Moon at 1109 Central Ave. on Nov. 5, 2021. She began teaching at Iowa Central, where she is a distinguished professor of communications, this fall.

She is a native of Georgia who now lives at 2809 10th Ave. N.

She has a bachelor’s degree in communications, a master’s degree in English and creative writing and a doctorate in education, all from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.

Borsay is seeking a council seat now held by Councilman Andy Fritz, who was appointed to fill a vacancy created when former Councilman Neven Conrad resigned in October after being named the magistrate for Humboldt County.

Fritz was appointed and sworn into office on Oct. 24. However, a petition signed by 440 people forced the City Council to schedule a special election.

If more than two candidates get into the race, a primary election will be held on Jan. 10.

The winner of the special election will serve until the end of 2023. That council seat will be on the November 2023 general election ballot.
