DCI investigating Webster Co. Sheriff’s Office detective

A detective with the Webster County Sheriff’s Office is the subject of a criminal investigation by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

According to a Brady/Giglio disclosure made by the Webster County Attorney’s Office, Sheriff’s Det. Thomas Steck has been placed on administrative leave and the DCI is actively investigating the detective.

A search warrant was executed on Steck on Wednesday, the letter says.

The Messenger reached out to Webster County Sheriff Luke Fleener, who deferred to the Webster County Attorney’s Office.

The DCI investigation is ongoing. The Messenger has reached out to the DCI for more information.

Steck joined the Sheriff’s Office in May 2021. Prior to that, he had worked for the Fort Dodge Police Department for 12 years.

Brady/Giglio requires prosecutors to disclose to defense counsel and defendants when an officer involved in the case has alleged incidents of misconduct that put their credibility into question.
