Taking center stage with Alex Tiernan

‘We can do great things’; Tiernan remains active at St. Edmond High School

Alex Tiernan’s debut with the St. Edmond fine arts programs came before she was technically in high school.

Tiernan was brought up to play bass guitar as an eighth-grader for the Gael show choir and jazz band.

But she didn’t stop there.

Tiernan, now a senior at SEHS, is also involved in choir, chamber choir, band, group speech, musical and competed on the athletic fields. She has also performed the national anthem at numerous sporting events, races, the Honor Flight and more.

“St. Edmond is a small community,” Tiernan said. “As an example of this, my graduating class only has 32 people. There are a few classes with closer to 45, but that’s about as big as they get.

“So, if we want to have things like a successful show choir or a state-performing jazz band, we need to get involved in as much as we can and put our hearts into everything we do. We may be small, but with a little bit of confidence and hard work, we can do great things and become mighty.”

Along the way, Tiernan has experienced many highs, lows and interesting moments.

“Every musical has its moments that don’t go quite as the cast had planned,” she said. “One of these happened during a performance of “Freaky Friday.” During the end of the song ‘What You Go,” Elie in Katherine’s body and played by Jordyn Putney, was supposed to be posing for a photo with her wedding cake and accidentally knocked it over.

“Unfortuantely, the lights got turned off before this could happen. Jordyn and I walked off stage and ended up rewriting the beginning of our next scene so we could make sure the cake broke and the scene made sense. The funniest part about this, though, was how well our personal reactions fit our character’s descriptions.

“I, being the high-strung perfectionist, had a mini-panic attack, but got refocused to fix the issue quickly. Jordyn on the other hand had a laugh about it like Ellie would, but stayed focused on the problem at hand like Katherine.”

Tiernan hopes to be remembered as “the girl who did it all.”

“The girl who balanced sports and music while keeping good grades and a loaded class schedule,” she said. “I want to be the one that people look up to as an example of putting her heart into everything no matter how she felt about the pieces she was doing or the group she was in.”

After graduating, Tiernan plans to attend a school to major in accounting and pre-law.
