Blaze claims farm building near Callender

No injuries reported

CALLENDER — A machine shed on a farm near Callender was destroyed in a Wednesday morning fire that started in a semitrailer truck which was parked inside the building.

The fire at 2748 Hayes Ave. was reported at about 11 a.m. No one was injured.

“When we got there, the building was basically fully engulfed,” Callender Fire Chief Shawn George said. “The fire was starting to spread into the building to the west. We got some quick water on that and saved the building to the west.”

Firefighters from five communities shuttled water to the scene in tanker trucks. George said the tankers were filling up at a hydrant in Callender, about four miles away. He estimated that 20,000 gallons of water were trucked to the scene.

The farm is owned by John and Jennifer Field, according to online records of the Webster County Assessor’s Office.

Firefighters from Callender, Gowrie, Moorland, Harcourt and Otho responded, along with the Southwest Webster Emergency Medical Service. Emergency personnel were on the scene for about three hours.
