The newest section of the ever-expanding Fort Dodge trail network will be built next year along North 22nd Street.

It will be a paved trail stretching from the 1600 block to the 2500 block, according to plans unveiled during a public meeting Thursday afternoon.

“We’ve received a lot of phone calls about safety on the roadway there and why don’t you build a trail here,” said Chad Schaeffer, the city’s chief development officer.

There are no sidewalks along that stretch of 22nd Street.

Schaeffer said constructing the trail will complete a loop by connecting with other trails. He said there are already trails on 10th Avenue North between 22nd and 32nd streets, 32nd Street between 10th and 25th avenues north, and 25th Avenue North between 32nd and 22nd streets. The new trail will connect all of those, he said.

The new trail is expected to cost $700,000. The city had a $500,000 federal recreational trails grant to help pay for it.

The trail will be 10 feet wide and made of concrete. It will be on the east side of the road.

Its southern endpoint will be near a curve in the road where North 22nd Street narrows significantly. The road is 40 feet wide south of that point, and Schaeffer a bike lane will be created there by painting lines on the road.

A new trail head with a small parking lot is on the west side of North 22nd Street, across from where the new trail is planned. That trail head provides access to the Nature Trail that runs north and south between 170th Street and the High Bridge over the Des Moines River.
