1 seriously injured in Sac County wreck

SAC CITY — A Sac City woman was seriously injured when she struck another vehicle at a stop sign in rural Sac County on Sunday afternoon.

According to the Sac County Sheriff’s Office, Jayne Barekas, 71, of Sac City, was driving a 1983 Chevrolet Caprice Classic when she struck the back of a 2016 Chevrolet truck driven by 68-year-old Jeffrey Grodahl, of Lytton. Grodahl was stopped at the stop sign headed east at the intersection of U.S. Highway 71 and 255th Street.

According to the release from the sheriff’s office, Barekas appears to have been in cardiac arrest at the time of the crash. Witnesses to the accident pulled Barekas from the vehicle and started CPR. She was initially transported to Loring Hospital in Sac City before being airlifted to a Des Moines hospital in critical condition.

Grodahl was not injured in the crash.
