Michael Hinners

POMEROY — A Pomeroy man accused of shooting and killing his brother earlier this month has pleaded not guilty to one count of first-degree murder in Calhoun County District Court.

Michael Kenneth Hinners, 66, was arrested on April 9, after police say he shot his brother during an argument outside a residence at 210 Ontario St. in Pomeroy. He filed his not-guilty plea on Thursday.

According to the criminal complaint, Michael Hinners and Anthony Hinners, 59, were arguing about a car that would not start around 4:30 p.m. on April 9.

Michael Hinners was standing on the front porch and allegedly pointed a 10-gauge shotgun at Anthony Hinners, who was at the bottom of the steps, and fired, hitting him once in the chest.

Anthony Hinners was pronounced dead at the scene.

In the written arraignment, Michael Hinners also waived his right to a speedy trial. A trial date has not yet been set.

Michael Hinners is being held at the Carroll County Jail on a $1 million cash-only bond.
