Building, street work set for Corridor Plaza this year

While the $17 million awarded Friday is key to the development of the plaza and pavilion at Corridor Plaza, construction of those features won’t begin right away.

However, there will be other construction and the debut of new businesses at the site this year, according to the developer and city officials.

A strip mall on the South 29th Street side of the site is being built and is expected to be complete late this summer. Two businesses are slated to open in it at that time: a restaurant called Teriyaki Madness and a laundromat called Clean Laundry. There will be room for two or three other businesses in the strip mall.

The former Younkers wing of the mall is being renovated to house additional businesses.

A new section of 27th Street, which will extend north from Fifth Avenue South, will be built this year, according to Chad Schaeffer, the city’s chief development officer.

Drivers snaking through orange barrels along Fifth Avenue South near Corridor Plaza are already seeing part of that 27th Street work. Schaeffer said the traffic restrictions are in place so that utility work can be done to prepare for extending water mains north under the new street.
