4 injured in vehicle fire

Four people were injured, three with serious burns, in an explosion and fire in an SUV on Saturday afternoon.

At 3:24 p.m., an explosion in an SUV was reported at World Liquors, 606 N. 15th St. When Fort Dodge Fire Rescue arrived, the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames, according to the FDFD.

The vehicle had four occupants at the time of the explosion:

-A 21-year-old female with burn injuries in critical condition

-A 7-year-old male with burn injuries in critical condition

-A 24-year-old male with burn injuries in serious condition

-A 23-year-old female with minor injuries.

The two patients in critical condition were transported by air ambulance to the University of Iowa Hospitals Burn Unit. The 24-year-old male was transported to the UI Burn Unit by ground ambulance. The female with minor injuries was treated at UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center.

The fire is believed to be caused by occupants of the vehicle using butane inside the SUV and one occupant lit a lighter, creating the explosion and fire.

The incident remains under investigation.

The FDFD was assisted on scene by the Fort Dodge Police Department.
