Iowa Central offers free healthcare classes

Iowa Central Business and Community is offering free healthcare related classes this spring as

part of their 2022 workforce initiative, Training Today for Tomorrow’s Workforce.

Classes offered will be Phlebotomy, Integrated Certified Nurse Aide (ICNA), Medical Billing and Coding, and Certified Nurse Aide (CNA).

“Now is the time to start a career in healthcare. There is more demand than ever, and the

opportunities are endless,” said long term care coordinator at Iowa Central

Community College, Brenda Larsen.

The phlebotomy class will be offered at Iowa Central’s Main Campus in Fort Dodge from March

11 to May 13. The class will be hybrid and on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. People interested in working in a healthcare lab setting may be interested in this class. Students will learn how to

collect blood and proper lab procedures and etiquette.

The ICNA class will be at the Eagle Grove Career Academy from March 21 to May 25, Monday

through Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The integrated CNA class will teach students the

basic skills of a CNA with the addition of workplace readiness skills, English language support in

the classroom, and basic math, reading, and writing support.

The Medical Billing and Coding class will be at Iowa Central’s Fort Dodge East Campus in Fort

Dodge from April 4 to June 13, on Monday and Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. There

will be two Saturday classes on April 20 and May 21, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This combined 80-hour billing and coding course offers the skills needed to solve insurance billing problems, how to manually file claims using the CPT and ICD-10 manual, complete common insurance forms, trace delinquent claims, appeal denied claims and use generic forms to streamline billing

procedures.

The CNA class will be offered at Iowa Central’s Main Campus in Fort Dodge from April 4 to

June 15, on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This class will

prepare nursing assistants for working in nursing facilities and skilled nursing facilities.

Training Today for Tomorrow’s Workforce, Iowa Central Business and Community’s current

workforce initiative, aims to enroll 300 students in their healthcare continuing education classes

in 2022, along with 300 students in transportation, and increase the number of women in the

manufacturing industry. These career pipelines have been identified as high need areas in the

Iowa Central region.

“We are excited to see the first round of classes part of Training Today for Tomorrow’s

Workforce roll out. We want to see our students succeed in the classroom and in the workforce,

and these certificate classes will help them do that,” said Shelly Blunk, executive director of

Economic, Workforce, and Continuing Education at Iowa Central.
