4-year-old in critical condition after near drowning

One child was flown to Des Moines in critical condition Saturday night after a near drowning at a Fort Dodge hotel.

Fort Dodge Fire Rescue personnel responded to a call at 6:05 p.m. Saturday at the Best Western Starlite Village, 1518 Third Ave. N.W., for a possible drowning, according to Fire Chief Steve Hergenreter.

Upon arrival, crews found a 4-year-old child had been removed from the water and CPR was being performed by a family member and a citizen.

Paramedics took over care and provided advanced life support treatments. The patient was transported in critical condition to the Unity Point Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center emergency department.

The child, who has not been identified, was then airlifted to Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines, according to Fort Dodge Police Sgt. Paul Samuelson.

The child’s current condition was unknown as of Sunday evening.

The situation is under investigation by the Fort Dodge Police Department.
