New candidates for District Court vacancy announced

A month after Gov. Kim Reynolds rejected the two nominees for a vacant judicial seat in Iowa District Court District 2B, the Judicial Nominating Commission has announced seven candidates who have applied in the second attempt to fill the seat.

The vacancy was created over the summer when then-District Court Judge Gina Badding, of Carroll, was appointed to the Iowa Court of Appeals by Reynolds.

The seven candidates who will be interviewed in Boone on Tuesday are:

• Jonathan Sam Beaty, Humboldt County attorney and assistant Hamilton County attorney.

• Joseph Tofilon, a district associate judge in Judicial District 2B from Fort Dodge.

• Joseph McCarville, a district associate judge in Judicial District 2B from Fort Dodge.

• Derek Johnson, a district associate judge in Judicial District 2B from Fort Dodge.

• Justin Deppe, a magistrate judge in Hamilton County and private attorney at Deppe Law Office in Jewell.

• Jerry Schnurr, an attorney with the Schnurr Law Firm P.C. in Fort Dodge.

• Ben Meyer, an attorney at Meyer Law P.C. in Laurens and magistrate in Pocahontas County.

Johnson and Beaty were initially nominated to the bench by the committee in October. However, Reynolds rejected the nominations after she learned of allegations that the commission’s chairman, District Court Judge Kurt Stoebe, acted inappropriately during the candidate interviews. Reynolds then told the commission to restart the nomination process.

Stoebe has since resigned from his role on the Judicial Nominating Commission, but remains a District Court judge.

After the commission interviews the seven candidates on Tuesday, they will narrow the list down to two nominees to present to Reynolds, who will then have 30 days to make the appointment.

Starting at $4.94/week.
