Explosion shakes co-op in Eagle Grove
EAGLE GROVE — An explosion rocked Eagle Grove Thursday morning, leaving significant damage to property but no injuries were reported.
A boiler at the Gold-Eagle Cooperative feedmill located at Northwest Eighth Street and Monroe Avenue suffered a mechanical malfunction, causing pressure to build and explode, according to CEO Chris Boshart.
“We’ll be doing a full investigation here in the coming days, but the boiler was operating under normal conditions five or six days a week and today it had problems, built up some pressure and blew apart. There was no fire fortunately, there was just a pressure explosion from the boiler,” Boshart said.
Boshart said they are thankful no one was hurt and they will just have some repairs to make. “We feel very fortunate about the fact that there are no injuries to employees or customers or any injuries to anybody,” said Boshart. “We have some buildings there to repair. It was all contained just to that boiler room but the rest of the facility is fine. Obviously we’ve got to replace the two boilers in that room.”
Boshart said they will still be able to make feed and are working on some temporary solutions since they cannot make all their products without steam. He said several neighboring cooperatives have reached out and offered help.
“We certainly appreciated emails and messages that I got today from neighboring co-ops offering to help out. They reached out and said they would certainly be willing to help us out and they’re thinking of us. So you know, we appreciate that type of working relationship in the industry,” Boshart said.
