Walmart jewelry thief pleads not guilty

A Farnhamville man accused of stealing nearly $25,000 worth of jewelry from the Fort Dodge Walmart has pleaded not guilty to several counts of burglary, theft and criminal mischief.

Joseph Midkiff, 35, was arrested on July 15 and is charged with:

• Two counts of second-degree burglary, a Class C felony

• One count of first-degree theft, a Class C felony

• One count of second-degree theft, a Class D felony

• Two counts of second-degree criminal mischief, a Class D felony

According to the Fort Dodge Police Department and court documents, Midkiff reportedly entered Walmart on two separate occasions this summer in the early morning hours when the store was closed to the public and occupied by employees.

The first incident occurred around 5:52 a.m. on May 27. Midkiff is accused of entering the store, damaging a glass jewelry case valued at $2,000, and stealing about $8,980 in various jewelry.

In the second incident, around 4:22 a.m. on July 11, Midkiff is accused of damaging a second glass jewelry case valued at $2,000, and stealing about $15,275 in various jewelry.

It is not clear from court documents how Midkiff entered or exited the building.

He was arrested July 15.

Midkiff filed his written plea of not guilty on Wednesday. His trial is scheduled for Dec. 7 at the Webster County Courthouse.
