Chester Harp shows how big the puffball mushrooms are behind his home by placing his own hat on one. Harp said he enjoys exploring the wooded area of Oleson Park behind his home and came across several of these mushrooms recently.

Two of the puffball mushrooms Chester Harp recently discovered growing just a few steps outside his back door are shown here. Harp and his wife, Pat, have lived in their house by Oleson Park since the early 1960s.

Some of the puffball mushrooms Harp found have begun to decompose and release their spores. Puffball mushrooms release a powdery dust of spores to cultivate new mushroom growth.
