Bev Axness shows off a fresh tray of chocolate chip cookies, a favorite of the Fort Dodge Senior High students she bakes for.

Bev Axness says her favorite thing to bake is chocolate chip cookies or peanut butter bars. Not because she likes them, but because the students at Fort Dodge Senior High School do.

Axness has worked full time in school kitchens since 1986. She started working at the elementary school in Badger until it closed and she moved to Fort Dodge Senior High. After about a year, she joined the baking department and she’s been baking ever since.

“At first it was just a job, but as I grew over the years I got into the baking department. I really enjoy the baking and I enjoy working with the kids and seeing them every day,” she said.

Axness said she’s seen kids after they graduate and is surprised when they remember her.

“One day I was at Walmart and this kid came up to me and I didn’t even recognize him at first. He said ‘I remember you. You were such a nice lady and you made such a difference in my life.’ and I asked him how I made a difference in his life and he said ‘Just because you were so nice.’ and that made me feel really good” she said.

Axness said part of the reason she’s stayed so long is because she loves everyone she works with.

“We’re all kind of close here and work well together. We help each other out and we have a lot of fun,” she said.

Axness said she cares about each student and loves making food they enjoy.

“Every one of the kids treat us with respect. We never have any trouble with any of them. I love every one of them,” said Axness.

She says although she’s beyond retirement age, she likes that her job gets her out of the house and keeps her moving.

“I love working in this kitchen. We just have a lot of fun,” she said.
