Councilman Dave Flattery, Cameron Nelson and Eugnene Melvin Newsome have entered the race for Fort Dodge City Council.
Flattery is seeking his sixth term representing Ward 3, which is the northeastern part of the city. He had served as an at-large member of council from 2008 to 2011.
Nelson is seeking to represent Ward 2, which is the southern part of the city.
Newsome is running for one of the two at-large seats on the council to be filled by the voters in the Nov. 2 election.
Dave Flattery
Flattery, of 1310 N. 29th St., is the president of Availa Bank in Fort Dodge.
He is a graduate of St. Edmond High School who earned a bachelor's degree from Iowa State University in Ames.
In addition to representing his ward, Flattery serves as mayor pro tem, which means he presides over the council meetings and handles other mayoral duties when Mayor Matt Bemrich is not available.
He recently led the effort to get the Floyd of Rosedale statue placed at the intersection of 10th Avenue North and 32nd Street. Floyd was a hog born on the old Rosedale Farm near that intersection. The hog became the basis of a traveling trophy that the University of Iowa and University of Minnesota football teams battle for every year.
Cameron Nelson
Nelson said running for the City Council ''has always been a dream of mine.'' He said he worked on Mayor Matt Bemrich's first mayoral campaign as a teenager and has been interested in city government ever since.
He said that if he is elected, his main goal will be to 'do whatever I can for the residents of Ward 2.''
''There's no big daunting issues that I think need to be changed,'' Nelson said. ''Things have been going well in our community and I want to help keep that progress going.''
Councilman Andy Fritz currently represents Ward 2. He has not publicly announced his plans for this year's election. However, Nelson said Fritz told him he would not be running again.
Nelson and his wife, Melissa, live on Highland Park Avenue. He is a sales manager at Shimkat Motor Co. in Fort Dodge.
The candidate is a native of Fort Dodge who graduated from St. Edmond High School and then took classes at Iowa Central Community College.
He is a board member and past president of the Fort Dodge Noon Rotary Club. He is also a board member of Webster County Crimestoppers and vice president of the Lifeworks Charitable Foundation. He is also a member of the Pleasant Valley Awareness Committee, the Leadership Fort Dodge Steering Committee and the Stage Door Productions board.
Eugene Newsome
Newsome, of 322 Ave. F, is a Georgia native who was an Army paratrooper from 1961 to 1966. He earned an associate degree from Iowa Central Community College.
He previously served on the city's Cable Television Commission.
Other candidates on the ballot so far include Bemrich, and council members Kim Alstott (Ward 4), Terry Moehnke (Ward 1) and Lydia Schuur (at-large).
