Lehigh River Days return

Celebration to run June 18-20

LEHIGH — After a year’s hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual Lehigh River Days celebration will be back this month.

The celebration will run Friday through June 20 in Lehigh.

“Hopefully this year is a good turn out,” said Brett Smith, chairman of the Lehigh River Days committee. “It’s nice to get back to normal.”

With last year’s event being canceled, this will be the 39th annual celebration.

Something new this year is going to be glow-in-the-dark volleyball on Friday night.

“It’s going to be fun to watch,” Smith said. “The only things that are going to be lit up are the boundary lines, the net and the ball.”

Registration for the glow-in-the-dark volleyball tournament will start at 7 p.m. with gameplay starting at 8 p.m.

Friday night will also have the Little Miss and Mr. River Days kids’ talent show at 5:30 p.m.

The parade will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday. After the parade, the Lehigh Museum will be open and there will be a car show and train rides on Main Street.

That afternoon will be a tasting at the Lehigh Locker, a bags tournament and bingo at the Community Center.

“Also new this year is a School Hill Bike Climb,” Smith said. “Lehigh is kind of known for all of the hills.”

They’re going to have people try to ride their bikes up the biggest hill in town. The climb starts at 3 p.m.

The senior center will host a lunch on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the Lehigh Fire Department will have its signature pork loin supper at the community center from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Saturday night will wrap up with a street dance featuring Section 7 Band from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. in downtown.

Sunday, June 20 will start with a community church service and then an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast at the ballpark starting at 8 a.m.

The Lehigh Locker Cook-Off will be on East Green from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“It’s a pretty town and the river goes right through it, so it’s kind of a neat area,” Smith said of Lehigh. “The people are all really friendly. It’s just a good small town.”

Most of the weekend’s events are free, except for the volleyball tournament. Smith said the volleyball tournament will also have team prizes.

Concessions will also be available from various vendors throughout the weekend.

Smith said he’s still hoping to have more vendors sign up for the three-day event. Interested vendors can call 515-359-2252 to sign up.
