Fort Dodge man sentenced for gun, drug crimes

SIOUX CITY — A Fort Dodge man has pleaded guilty and been sentenced for gun and drug crimes in federal court.

Kwane Dermarchel Wheat, 27, pleaded guilty in January to one count of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and one count of possession of a firearm as a drug user.

On Thursday, Wheat was sentenced to 52 months in federal prison.

At his guilty plea, Wheat admitted to being in possession of a gun on May 30, 2020, knowing he was prohibited from possessing a gun under a 2019 protection order. He also admitted to being found by law enforcement in possession of a gun, two plastic bags of marijuana and cocaine during an April 2019 traffic stop.

After his prison term, Wheat will have to serve a two-year term of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal court system.

Starting at $4.62/week.
