FD woman dies in truck versus bicycle crash
Ristau, 65, was educator in Fort Dodge school system for 17 years
A Fort Dodge woman was killed after a truck versus bicycle crash Tuesday morning, according to the Fort Dodge Police Department.
Melissa Ristau, 65, was pronounced dead at the scene. Ristau was employed with the Fort Dodge Community School District for 17 years.
She primarily worked as director of special needs. She also served as principal at Riverside Early Learning Center. Ristau retired in 2018.
The crash she was involved in was reported shortly after 9:30 a.m. at the intersection South 31st Street and Eighth Avenue South.
Upon arrival, emergency personnel found Ristau unresponsive and lying in the roadway.
According to the Webster County Medical Examiner’s Office, Ristau suffered injuries to her head.
The preliminary investigation indicated that a 2003 GMC Sierra 2500 pickup being driven by Peyten Rasmussen, 18, of Goldfield, turned northbound onto 31st Street from Eighth Avenue South. While the vehicle was in motion, Ristau was struck while crossing the street on a tricycle, according to police.
The Fort Dodge Police Department, Fort Dodge Fire Department, Webster County Sheriff’s Office, Webster County Medical Examiner’s Office, Iowa State Patrol and Fort Dodge Public Works Department, were on scene.
The Iowa State Patrol will be assisting in the investigation.
