This large display shows some of the items to be found at the Fort Dodge Federated Garden Club’s Plant and Treasures Sale. It shows that there will be more than plants, shrubs and bulbs available. The sale is from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the Lions Den in Armstrong Park on Exposition Drive.

Anyone wanting some plants to get their garden or flower bed started this spring could probably find exactly what they need Thursday at the Fort Dodge Federated Garden Club’s Plant and Treasures Sale.

But organizers say there will be a lot more than plants available at the sale, which will be from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Lions Den at Armstrong Park on Exposition Drive.

Basically anything garden-related will be there, according to Nancy Phillips and Barb Gollob, the co-chairs of the event. The available items will include annual plants, perennials, shrubs, bulbs, garden decor, yard art, tools, pots, shepherd’s hooks, vases and garden-related books and magazines.

“There should be something for everyone, I should think,” Gollob said.

“That building will be full,” Phillips added.

Masks will be required at the sale.

The Fort Dodge Federated Garden Club has held this sale for more than 20 years, although last year’s sale was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The sale and the annual tour of local gardens held in the summer are the major fundraisers for the club.

Gollob said the money raised by the events is used to buy garden-related books for the Fort Dodge Public Library, and to provide scholarships for area students studying horticulture and related subjects. The club also uses the money to purchase and plant trees in memory of deceased members. Lastly, the club makes donations to the Iowa Arboretum and the Des Moines Botanical Center.
