With the results of the 2020 census coming in, Webster County officials are preparing for the possibility that the boundaries of some voting precincts may have to be changed.

Each precinct is supposed to have 3,500 people in it, according to Webster County Auditor Doreen Pliner.

The census numbers may prompt some changes to existing precincts to maintain that number, she said. However, she said she did not expect any major changes.

To tackle the task of examining census data and precinct boundaries, the Webster County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday appointed a temporary commission. It consists of Tina Eldal, a deputy county auditor; Andy McGill, the county’s director of management information systems;; and County Recorder Lindsay Laufersweiler.

The commission’s work has to be done by the end of October.

The commission will not address the boundaries of state Senate and state House of Representatives districts. Those boundaries are drawn up by the Legislative Services Agency.

Pliner said that under a change in state law enacted about two years ago, the Legislative Services Agency will also draw up the boundaries of the districts that each member of the Board of Supervisors represents.
