FD teen charged with Family Dollar robbery

Bowden arrested following chase

Fort Dodge Police arrested a Fort Dodge teenager after he allegedly robbed Family Dollar with a butcher knife Saturday night.

Mi’quavion Bowden, 17, was arrested after police say he demanded money from a store employee while wielding the 9-inch blade, threatening to harm her if she didn’t open the cash drawer. When the employee said she didn’t have access to any money, criminal complaints say the defendant began taking merchandise off the shelf and putting it in his backpack.

Reports say Bowden, donning gloves and a face mask, was found on foot with the items shortly after the incident at approximately 9 p.m. Bowden was arrested after a chase on foot, the arresting officer said in his report. Law enforcement said he subsequently showed them where he threw the knife and face mask, which were both recovered.

The complaint said the teenager entered the discount store on South 15th Street for the sole purpose of robbing it. The value of items allegedly stolen was under $300.

Bowden is charged with:

• First-degree robbery, a class B felony.

• Going armed with intent, a class D felony.

• Interference with official acts, a simple misdemeanor.

• Fifth-degree theft, a simple misdemeanor.

Bowden appeared in Webster County Magistrate Court Monday morning and is being detained at the Central Iowa Detention Center in Eldora. He’s held on a $30,000 cash-only bond; $25,000 for first-degree robbery, $5,000 for going armed with intent. The latter two charges have been continued 180 days.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 23.
