Sewer rate hike, bond issues on FD City Council agenda

2 sewer rate hikes would take place one year apart

The proposed mask mandate is far from the only thing awaiting the attention of the Fort Dodge City Council tonight.

Sewer rate increases are also on the agenda. A pair of 3 percent increases intended to cover inflation in the cost of running the sewer system are proposed.

The first increase would take effect Jan. 1, 2021. It would mean homeowners would pay a minimum of $17.80 a month, plus $3.44 for every 1,000 gallons above 3,000 gallons.

The second increase would take effect Jan. 1, 2022. It would result in a minimum monthly bill for homeowners of $18.33 plus $3.54 for every 1,000 gallons above 3,000 gallons.

The rate increase plan must be approved by the council three times to go into effect. The council will consider the first reading of it tonight.

Also tonight, the council will consider the initial steps to refinance an existing bond and issue some new bonds.

City officials are considering refinancing $2.95 million worth of bonds to take advanatge of new, lower interest rates.

Borrowing an additional $8.5 million is also being considered. That money would be used to compensate the new owners of the mall for demolition costs ($6.7 million), demolition of various blighted properties ($1.55 million) and providing matching funds for the ongoing downtown facade renovation project ($250,000).
