Man charged with violations after thousands of jail calls

Ian Forbes

A Webster County Jail inmate was charged Tuesday with 40 counts of violation of a no contact order after criminal complaints said he called the protected subject of his order more than 2,500 times.

Fort Dodge man Ian Forbes, 36, appeared in Webster County Magistrate Court Tuesday to answer to the multitude of counts after officers listening in to his calls from the jail caught on to the contact.

The calls, made to two different phone numbers starting with Forbes’ arrest on Oct. 20, were to the subject of two no contact orders.

Officers initially thought Forbes was only leaving voicemails, criminal complaints said. After further investigation, officers who listened in allege that the protected party directed him to call another phone number.

Forbes made 115 calls to one phone number and 2,538 to the other as of court filings Tuesday. The conversations, which law enforcement described as “verbally affectionate,” included plans to try to drop the no contact order after a domestic abuse assault incident.

A hearing on Forbes’ new charges has been set for Dec. 18.
